University assignment - create an monetizing app

Can people advise what would be the best api to generate an app like this? Build and integrate a "monetizing" widget using the EBay API Although necessary, it is not sufficient to simply pull and display Ebay items relating to the English Civil War. To achieve maximum marks, you will also need to analyse and explore how you might generate real income using the Ebay Developer Tools.

That's a pretty big task. People have full-time jobs trying to monetize apps online, eBay or not. For starters, I'd say use the Finding API family of calls. It's easy to get started building calls, you don't need tokens or hassle there, and you can even build test calls right within your browser. findItemsAdvanced is a versatile call that'll grant you access to most of the eBay items in its inventory. Start with that. As for the underlying business model, that's a pretty big question. Are we talking downloadable apps for mobile phones and tablets? Or an application downloaded onto a desktop computer? Maybe a web app that works across devices? Or a widget placed on other websites or blogs? Generally speaking, the monetization will involve generating income from either: 1) Advertising. Per impression via ads, per click via ads, or per sale via affiliate ads. 2) End-user payments. Like the purchase of the app, or a subscription to a service the app works with. Another question you should get solidified before you even get started: Who has ownership and rights of the widget/app/business after the project is completed (and along the way)? It would suck if you did all this work, and your university professor then ended up owning a few handfuls of monetized apps from his/her students and a nice side income as a result...
